Enforces backup retention policies by removing old backups

This task implements the backup retention policy by removing old backups that exceed the configured retention count. Protected backups are preserved regardless of age.

The task first scans for available backups, identifies which ones are eligible for deletion based on retention settings, and removes them while updating the inventory accordingly.
